Despite the anticipation humming in her veins -- or maybe because of it -- Kate takes her time in the shower, reveling in the simple pleasure of inhabiting her own body once more.

"In everythin' an' nothin'," he says, and it's a quip reply, but also an honest one.

"Darlin', you, are sexy as hell."

She covers his hands with hers and gives his fingers a gentle squeeze.

It's not that she isn't confident, but sexy isn't an adjective she associates herself with -- and after nearly two years together, and given the stress she and Bill have been living with, the compliment is a welcome one.

"Thank you."

His smile and eyes soften, and his voice is warm.

"No thankin'."

He doesn't tell her near enough how good she looks or how she makes him feel, and it's something he's going to have to work on, because she deserves it.

Turning his hands over under hers to offer his palms, the teasing comes back.

"I outta be thankin' you. Havin' you around makes me look good."

She threads her fingers with his, breathing a chuckle.

"Is that what you say to all the girls, sheriff?"

He laughs, lifting one of her hands to his mouth and laying a kiss against her thumb.

"Only the pretty ones."

"Fair enough."

She eases off him and settles against his side once more, nuzzling his jaw near his ear.

"I'll take that as a compliment."

His arm goes around her and his eyes slip closed.

"Good, 'cause that's how I meant it."

Hand on her arm, his fingers brush her skin beneath the sleeve of the jersey near her elbow.

Smiling to herself, she pillows her head on his shoulder; she drapes an arm around his stomach and hooks one leg around his, fitting against him with a quiet, contented sigh.

Tomorrow, she knows the daily grind will begin anew, but right now, South Carolina feels light years away.
